New Study Finds Password Habits Increase People’s Vulnerability to Hacks

Hikvision Covers Using Password Managers to Reduce Security Concerns

In its third annual report “Psychology of Passwords,” password manager provider, LastPass, found that people’s password habits are increasing their vulnerability to password hacks. Security magazine covered results of the survey in its article, “91% of People Know Password Reuse is Insecure, Yet 75% do it Anyway.”

From the article: “Data from the survey shows that 91 percent of people know that using the same password on multiple accounts is a security risk, yet 66 percent continue to use the same password anyway. With people spending more time online, the evolution of cybersecurity threats and the unchanged behavior in creating and managing passwords creates a new level of concern around online security.”

Findings from LastPass research also found:

  • Contradictions between knowledge and behavior: The majority of respondents said they “feel informed on password best practices,” while more than 50 percent try to memorize passwords and 27 percent stated they write them down.

  • Password reuse is most common because of fear of forgetfulness: 60 percent of respondents stated that they reuse passwords across multiple sites because they are afraid of forgetting their login information.

A Password Manager is a software tool that is used to store all of your passwords in an encrypted file so that you, and no one else, have very easy access to them, helping to minimize security concerns. Most modern password managers have additional features such as cloud storage, auto-filling fields, and password generators that make very good passwords. Read this Hikvision article to learn more about using a password manager tool to reduce security concerns and vulnerability to hacks.
