Datto’s State Of The Channel Ransomware Report found that 86 percent of small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs) had been victims of ransomware—a type of malware—according to the article in Security magazine “Ransomware is the Biggest Threat for Small to Medium Businesses.”

The survey gathered data from 1,700 managed service providers (MSPs) that service 100,000 SMB clients globally.

From the article: “An estimated five percent of global SMBs fell victim to a ransomware attack from 2016 to 2017. According to 97 percent of managed service providers (MSPs), ransomware attacks are more frequent in 2017. According to 99 percent of MSPs, the frequency of SMB targeted attacks will continue to increase over the next two years.”

Other key report findings include:

  • 35 percent of SMBs paid the ransom when being victimized by the malware threat in 2017, down from 41 percent the prior year.
  • Construction, manufacturing and professional services were the industries targeted most by ransomware.
  • 75 percent of MSPs reported that clients experienced down time as the result of a ransomware attack.
