Hikvision on Identifying Phishing Emails to Reduce Security Concerns

The Canadian Security magazine article, “Canadian firms targeted with increasingly sophisticated phishing techniques,” details security concerns from a rise in clever email cyberattack methods.

“We’ve seen everything from fake divorce papers to fake medical diagnoses, sometimes not even for the recipient of the email,” said Ryan Kalember, Proofpoint senior VP, in the article.

Proofpoint’s recent survey found that almost 100 cybercrime campaigns targeted Canadians earlier this year, disguising emails and inserting risky links and attachments. A study by cybersecurity firm Darktrace found that Canadians were “about three times as likely to download malware compared with clients in other countries,” according to the article.

This email vulnerability is leveraged by fraudsters if they determine someone’s password, making it easier for them to impersonate a corporate supervisor or other employee.

Hikvision’s blog about examples of phishing offers insights help employees identify phishing emails and reduce the likelihood of being targeted by these types of attacks. In the article, Hikvision cybersecurity director, Chuck Davis, said: “Phishing attacks have long been an effective way for attackers to trick people into divulging sensitive information or infecting a system with malware. Malware can give an attacker remote access to protected systems and networks, encrypt a user’s data and charge a ransom to decrypt the data, or use that system as part of an attack against other systems.”

Davis also authored a recent Hikvision blog about using multi-factor authentication to reduce security concerns. Visit this link to read his insights.
